The QAC issue…

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are active ingredients in over 200 disinfectants currently recommended by the U.S. EPA for use to inactivate the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Virus. The usage of these chemicals has elevated since the pandemic, and if not neutralized prior to distribution these chemicals can be harmful to the environment and if not compliant, will cause factories to be shut down.

How NeutraQuat helps

NeutraQuat is a product created by Hydro Solutions that neutralizes the quaternary ammonium compounds. This custom blend also neutralizes phenols, hexachlorophene, formalin, and ethanol. This neutralization supports growth of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms and promotes a healthy bacterial environment. The amount of NeutraQuat used can be assessed after samples are run through our lab and evaluated by our team at Hydro Solutions.

Popular brewery uses NeutraQuat to achieve 90% removal of QACs

One of our clients is a popular brewery in Colorado that has been using NeutraQuat to minimize the impact of QACs on whole effluent toxicity.  With the use of NeutraQuat, test results have verified the ability to maintain QACs less than 0.5 mg/L in the final effluent with over 90% removal of both total and free QACs.

NeutraQuat has been shown to remove over 90% of the most common QACs found in sanitation chemicals commonly used in the industrial sector.

NeutraQuat has been beneficial to the rendering industry proven to help minimize toxic events due to slug loads.

NeutraQuat is used by many poultry facilities to prevent QACs from interfering with nitrification, denitrification, and methanogenesis.

How NeutraQuat works

NeutraQuat™ attaches to the toxic alkyl chain of the quaternary ammonium compound (the shorter the alkyl chain length, the more toxic the quat is, and the shorter alkyl chain length also makes it more apt to be bacterially biodegradable), thus reducing the quaternary ammonium compounds’ potential toxicity in both anaerobic and aerobic waste streams and increasing its biodegradability in aerobic wastewater systems.

Benefits of NeutraQuat

The utilization of NeutraQuat™ brings about a waste stream that is less negatively impacted biologically by the inclusion of quaternary ammonium compounds. This targeted blend of biochemicals aimed at the neutralization of quaternary ammonium compounds also neutralizes phenols, hexachlorophene, formalin, and ethanol. This neutralization supports growth of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms and promotes a healthy bacterial environment.

NeutraQuat and Anaerobic

In anaerobic wastewater systems, NeutraQuat™ helps with enhanced gas production, the formation of anaerobic granules, and enhancement of BOD removal that has been compromised by the presence of quaternary ammonium compounds.

NeutraQuat and Aerobic

In aerobic wastewater systems, NeutraQuat™ will reduce biomass foaming due to quaternary ammonium compounds, assist in reducing nitrification toxicity, and improve overall biological treatment. NeutraQuat™ does not contain anionic surfactant and will not adversely affect Whole Effluent Toxicity (WET) test results. Overfeeding will not harm system.
