PROBLEM

Toxicity/Inhibition

Wastewater treatment relies heavily on microbes to break down organic matter and pollutants. Toxicity and inhibition pose a big problem for these facilities because they harm or hinder these microbial workhorses.

Why toxicity issues need to be resolved quickly.

Toxic substances can outright kill the microbes, reducing their overall population and crippling their ability to clean the wastewater. This can lead to untreated pollutants flowing out of the facility, harming the environment and potentially human health.

Why inhibition issues need to be resolved quickly.

Even if not lethal, some substances can weaken or inhibit the microbes. This slows down the breakdown process, making treatment less efficient. Even a minor reduction in microbial activity can cause problems, as wastewater treatment plants often operate on tight margins.

We run tests to better understand your specific situation

RESOLUTION

Our approach to helping you stay in compliance and have your facility run efficiently is to use our lab to better understand what is causing your issues. This allows us to create a regimented protocol for treatment. For toxicity and inhibition issues we would run the following tests:

  • Biological Health Exam

  • Inhibitory Company Exam

Products

We have several products that are produced in-house that help resolve toxicity and inhibition.

  • Tox Master™ is designed to neutralize the organic compounds associated with and often used as disinfectants in industrial sanitation.

  • HydroCarrier™ EN is a mineral based micro-carrier that pulls ammonia nitrogen into its interior to allow for a continuous enriched supply of ammonia nitrogen to the nitrifying bacteria that colonize its surface. The colonization of nitrifying bacteria onto the surface of HydroCarrier™ EN will allow for a greater density of these bacteria within the biomass of a wastewater system.

  • NeutraQuat™ is designed to neutralize the quaternary ammonium compounds (quats) often used as disinfectants in industrial sanitation that can negatively affect the performance of anaerobic and aerobic wastewater treatment. Quats are not broken down during anaerobic treatment which inhibit anaerobic bacteria leading to diminished BOD removal, reduced methane production, and reduction in the production of anaerobic granules in high-rate anaerobic wastewater systems. In aerobic wastewater treatment, the presence of quaternary ammonium compounds leads to biomass foaming, dispersion of biomass floc, diminished BOD removal, and loss of nitrification. The introduction of the quaternary ammonium neutralizing biochemical, NeutraQuat™, will bind up the free quaternary ammonium compounds and reduce their toxicity to anaerobic and aerobic wastewater biomass.
